- Automated fiber placement offers a high potential for the individual production of
load-optimized, continuous fiber reinforced polymer composites. Therefore, this
technology is increasingly in the focus of current developments, especially for the
manufacture of high performance thermoplastic composite parts. In the field of
thermoplastic composites, this technology is currently limited to the processing of fully
impregnated and consolidated semi-finished products (tapes). Within the presented
research, a newly designed process chain based on the combination of dry rovings
(GF) and polymer powder (PC/PBT) to thermoplastic powder-towpregs, their
subsequent automated fiber placement to pre-impregnated preforms and direct
impregnation within the variothermal pressing process, was methodically investigated
using design of experiments. The results provide a basic process understanding of the
individual processing steps with regard to impregnation mechanisms and progress. It
has been shown that a macro-impregnation of the fiber structure is achieved within the
fiber placement process, which also significantly influences the subsequent pressing
process. Thus, the results of this work form the basis for understanding and application
of the new process chain as well as for the adjustment and evaluation of the process
parameters for the production of continuous and load-optimized fiber reinforced
thermoplastic composites with individual matrix and fiber materials.
