In multiple criteria optimization an important research topic is the topological structure of the set \( X_e \) of efficient solutions. Of major interest is the connectedness of \( X_e \), since it would allow the determination of \( X_e \) without considering non-efficient solutions in the
process. We review general results on the subject,including the connectedness result for efficient solutions in multiple criteria linear programming. This result can be used to derive a definition of connectedness for discrete optimization problems. We present a counterexample to a previously stated result in this area, namely that the set of efficient solutions of the shortest path problem is connected. We will also show that connectedness does not hold for another important problem in discrete multiple criteria optimization: the spanning tree problem.

We consider multiple objective combinatiorial optimization problems in which the first objective is of arbitrary type and the remaining objectives are either bottleneck or k-max objective functions. While the objective value of a bottleneck objective is determined by the largest cost value of any element in a feasible solution, the kth-largest element defines the objective value of the k-max objective. An efficient solution approach for the generation of the complete nondominated set is developed which is independent of the specific combinatiorial problem at hand. This implies a polynomial time algorithm for several important problem classes like shortest paths, spanning tree, and assignment problems with bottleneck objectives which are known to be NP-hard in the general multiple objective case.

Connectedness of efficient solutions is a powerful property in multiple objective combinatorial optimization since it allows the construction of the complete efficient set using neighborhood search techniques. In this paper we show that, however, most of the classical multiple objective combinatorial optimization problems do not possess the connectedness property in general, including, among others, knapsack problems (and even several special cases of knapsack problems) and linear assignment problems. We also extend already known non-connectedness results for several optimization problems on graphs like shortest path, spanning tree and minimum cost flow problems. Different concepts of connectedness are discussed in a formal setting, and numerical tests are performed for different variants of the knapsack problem to analyze the likelihood with which non-connected adjacency graphs occur in randomly generated problem instances.

The Multiple Objective Median Problem involves locating a new facility so that a vector of performance criteria is optimized over a given set of existing facilities. A variation of this problem is obtained if the existing facilities are situated on two sides of a linear barrier. Such barriers like rivers, highways, borders, or mountain ranges are frequently encountered in practice. In this paper, theory of the Multiple Objective Median Problem with line barriers is developped. As this problem is nonconvex but specially-structured, a reduction to a series of convex optimization problems is proposed. The general results lead to a polynomial algorithm for finding the set of efficient solutions. The algorithm is proposed for bi-criteria problems with different measures of distance.

Ramsey Numbers of K_m versus (n,k)-graphs and the Local Density of Graphs not Containing a K_m

In this paper generalized Ramsey numbers of complete graphs K_m versus the set langle ,n,k angle of (n,k)-graphs are investigated. The value of r(K_m,langle n,k angle) is given in general for (relative to n) values of k small compared to n using a correlation with Turan numbers. These generalized Ramsey numbers con be used to determine the local densities of graphs not containing a subgraph K_m.

The Weber problem for a given finite set of existing facilities {cal E}x = {Ex_1,Ex_2, ... ,Ex_M} subset R^2 with positive weights w_m (m = 1, ... ,M) is to find a new facility X* in R^2 such that sum_{m=1}^{M} w_{m}d(X,Ex_m) is minimized for some distance function d. In this paper we consider distances defined by polyhedral gauges. A variation of this problem is obtained if barriers are introduced which are convex polygonal subsets of the plane where neither location of new facilities nor traveling is allowed. Such barriers like lakes, military regions, national parks or mountains are frequently encountered in practice.From a mathematical point of view barrier problems are difficult, since the prensence of barriers destroys the convexity of the objective function. Nevertheless, this paper establishes a descretization result: One of the grid points in the grid defined by the existing facilities and the fuundamental directions of the gauge distances can be proved to be an optimal location. Thus the barrier problem can be solved with a polynomial algorithm.

In this paper we consider the problem of locating one new facility in the plane with respect to a given set of existing facility where a set of polygonal barriers restricts traveling. This non-convex optimization problem can be reduced to a finite set of convex subproblems if the objective function is a convex function of the travel distances between the new and the existing facilities (like e.g. the Median and Center objective functions). An exact Algorithm and a heuristic solution procedure based on this reduction result are developed.
