  • The present work deals with the modelling of the equilibrium between a hydrogel phase and a surrounding liquid. The hydrogels were synthesized either from a single nonionic monomer (either N-isopropyl acrylamide (IPAAm) or N-vinylpyrrolidon (VP)) or they consisted of one of those non-ionic monomers and the ionic comonomer sodium methacrylate - all using the same cross-linking agent. Two thermodynamic models were used to correlate/predict the swelling equilibrium. The models separate the liquid mixture properties of the gel phase from its elastic properties. Each of these methods combines an equation for the Gibbs excess energy of an aqueous solution of non-cross-linked polymer chains with an equation for the Helmholtz energy of an elastic network. The modeling of the swelling equilibrium in aqueous solutions of strong electrolytes was achieved with an osmotic virial equation (VERS model) whereas a combination of the UNIQUAC model with a “free-volume” correction (FV-model) was used to describe the Gibbs excess energy in aqueous/organic, but nonelectrolyte solvents. The elastic properties of the gel were described by an extended phantom network theory. The swelling equilibrium of nonionic IPAAm hydrogels in aqueous solutions of two single salts (NaCl and Na2HPO4) was described. The extension to the swelling equilibrium of ionic hydrogels additionally considered the dissociation equilibrium of the ionic comonomer sodium methacrylate and an empirical modification of the phantom network theory that accounts for the strong swelling of such ionic gels in aqueous solutions. Most model parameters (interaction parameters and dissociation constant of NaMA) were determined form independent experimental data. Only some model parameters (including one network parameter for each hydrogel) had to be fitted to the degree of swelling in pure water. The resulting model allows to predict quantitatively the changes that are observed when NaCl is replaced by Na2HPO4, and the effects of a variation of some characteristic properties (e.g., concentration of monomer, crosslinker, comonomer) of the hydrogel. The swelling behaviours of nonionic VP hydrogels and ionic VP/NaMA hydrogels in aqueous solutions of the same single salts were also correlated/predicted using the VERS model together with the phantom network theory. The model reliably predicts the influence of some characteristic properties of the hydrogels (e.g., concentrations of crosslinker and comonomer during preparation) on the degree of swelling of VP/NaMA hydrogels in aqueous solutions of NaCl as well as in aqueous solutions of Na2HPO4. A simplified thermodynamic model was used to describe the swelling behaviour of IPAAm/NaMA hydrogels in aqueous solutions of five single organic solvents (acetone, ethanol, acetic acid, butanol and MIBK). The liquid mixture properties of the gel phase were approximated by those of a mixture of polymer chains, water, organic solvent and counterions which dissociate from the ionic groups of the network. The Gibbs excess energy of that liquid was described by combining the UNIQUAC model for nonelectrolyte solutions with the freevolume theory The elastic properties of the gel are described through the phantom network theory. The model allows for a reliable description of the degree of swelling of IPAAm/NaMA hydrogels in the investigated aqueous solutions. A modified UNIQUAC model (that neglects the combinatorial contributions) together with the phantom network theory was used for the calculation of the swelling of VP hydrogels in aqueous/organic liquid mixtures. The influence of NaMA on the swelling/shrinking of ionic hydrogels in aqueous-organic mixtures was also addressed. The prediction results for the degree of swelling agree with the experimental results for the swelling behaviour of VP/NaMA hydrogels in aqueous solutions of acetone or ethanol, if the influence of the organic solvent on the dissociation of NaMA is taken into account.
