On an isotropic and centrifugal-force invariant layout of a conically shaped gas-lubricated high-speed spiral-groove bearing

  • The elaboration in hand discusses the completely analytical layout of a self-acting gas-lubricated high-speed conically shaped spiral-groove bearing as well as its complete practical realization. After initial consideration the total simple conically shaped bearing is separated into two conical main bearings being situated at the ends of the cone-stump. Both have the same angle size but differ concerning their bearing geometries and bearing gap sizes. The isotropical layout of the two bearings in radial direction, meaning the determination of the bearing geometries for the same load angle, the same load capacity and the same stiffnesses at same nominal operating conditions, is determined in an analytical as well as in an iterative way. The complete and numerical optimization of the spiral-groove parameters by calculations by BOOTSMA with respect to the maximal reachable stability and under maintenance of the isotropical layout and behaviour pursues the destination of a dynamic inconspicuous behaviour. The radial expansion of the rotor which occurs at the nominal rotation and therefore the occurring of distortions of the bearing gaps at the enormous centrifugal forces affecting the rotor masses are made avoidable by a centrifugal force invariant inner outline of the rotor and the therefore resulting mechanism. The conically shaped inner outline is supposed to expand congruently to itself in order to increase the bearing gap of the total bearing in a parallel manner. Therefore the outer outline of the rotor is formed appropriately. The now resulting autonomous regulation to the nominal sizes of the bearing gaps restores the nominal conditions independent on the rotor speed. The half-frequency whirl for self-acting gas-lubricated bearings, critical and depending on its naturalfrequenzies, requires a determination of the dynamical behaviour of the bearing system. The determinations showed that naturalfrequenzies are reached during the run through the turning frequency range. However, the suspension of the “rotor-stator” system in defined additional stiffnesses has shown that the naturalfrequenzies of the original system can be staggered towards such a high point that the turning frequency can not reach an naturalfrequenzy anymore, no matter in which working point. Thus, an appearance of a half-frequency whirl is avoided. The complete realization of the bearing system was discussed and the results were used to develop and establish the test apparatus. Problems were solved concerning the actuation of high-speed rotational bearings, the measurement principle and devices to record the rotor positions at adequate speed and precision, a non-self-acting start-up assistance at low rotation speed, system pre-stressing and an autonomous system regulation at operation. The experimental results confirm the consistent pursued destination of developing a bearing system for high-speed rotation. As expected the dynamic behaviour for ungrooved bearing members is limited due to the missing stability at concentric conditions. At lower speeds the behaviour and the performance is determined to be good anyway. The behaviour in the case of either the grooved or the ungrooved bearing member is rotating is not distinguishable among each other. Both cases offer a save and favourable operation of the system up to high turning frequencies and confirm the performed efforts regarding the centrifugal force invariant bearing gaps, the overall isotropical bearing layout as well as the introduced natural frequency inducement to avoid dynamical instabilities like such as the half-frequency whirl. The analytically and experimentally elaborated results are fundamental for new ways concerning high-speed bearings of the spindle construction, the laser- and dental technique and of automotive components.
